Considering I live in a small town, we seem to have a lot of animal issues. I guess it's no different anywhere else, but this week I found out that the low-cost spay/neuter clinic I worked for in 2001 is going to close tomorrow after 20 years of serving the community. Obviously, this loss is going to have a big impact. At the clinic, the prices were truly low. You could get a cat neutered for $20 when I worked there. Many people who otherwise would have let dogs and cats remain "unfixed" brought them in. We spayed and neutered a lot of feral cats and foster animals. Many clients were retired folks on fixed incomes. Even with all the good they did, I may be the only person who isn't surprised the clinic is closing. Read More »

Susan Daffron talks to Christy Thomson from the Seattle Humane Society about a dog named Blue who is currently in foster care. Contrary to what you might think from her name, Blue is not a merle or blue gray-colored dog. She's actually a deep chocolate brown color with a white stripe up her muzzle. Blue is 10 months old, so she's still a bit of a puppy, but she loves everyone. Read More »

This week here in Idaho there was a big controversy about a store which has wolves (actually probably really wolf hybrids) on display in cages. During a tour, one of the "wolves" bit a 6-year old child who stuck her arm through the chain link. Personally, I detest the place and the people who own it for a lot of reasons. But my personal opinion aside, this incident brings up a lot of issues that may affect people in rescue too. Read More »

We talked about a wide range of subjects, but focused on how a lot of what it takes to increase adoptability comes down to keeping it positive, which includes keeping the humans positive too. Yesterday, two things transpired that caused me to think about how important it is for humane and animal rescue groups to work together. First I got an email from the Humane Society of the United States about a big puppy mill rescue they worked on in Eastern Washington, which is not too far away from here. Working with a number of local shelters and rescue groups, they pulled 371 American Eskimo dogs out of a horrible living situation. Read More »
