The best approach to getting donations is to always focus on what's in it for the business. What they want is the exposure. Supporting a charity makes THEM look good in the eyes of potential customers. Be sure to mention your sponsors in your advertisements, and make sure your sponsors know they'll be mentioned.

Running a rescue isn't just about taking care of homeless animals. You need a lot of creativity and new ideas to do a good job, raise funds, and find new forever homes. Continuing to do what isn't working "just because" is a common mistake and a key reason many organizations struggle to even continue operating.

Both dogs and humans benefit from training. Countless surveys have shown that people who train their adopted dogs are more likely to keep them. Every day, dogs are turned in to shelters and rescues because of simple behavior issues that could be solved by training. Classes can be a great "friend-raiser" and even a mini-fundraiser. Done well, classes can generate some great "word of mouth" marketing for your organization.

Oddly enough, many organizations are so worried about offending their donors that they actually don't ask for donations in many of their communications. It's a recipe for disaster. You won't get donations if you don't ask.
