This week, I was talking to someone about how much you can learn from dogs. Dogs can teach us many things about business (whether non-profit or for profit).
Here are seven things I've learned from my dogs:
1. Sometimes you have to be the alpha. Let's face it, particularly when it comes to employees or volunteers, sometimes you have to put your foot down. If someone does something wrong, you may need to kick some tail. Someone needs to be the pack leader. In the absence of someone else, it may be you.
2. Play is good. We all know what all work and no play does to you. So do dogs. If you've ever seen how happy a group of dogs is after a big stomping play fest, you realize the importance of having a good time.
3. Appreciate everyone in your pack. Tell people you work with how much you value what they do. Say please and thank you. (And "sit" nicely when you are asked to.)
4. Celebrate every moment. When someone comes through your door, it's a big deal. Treat that person like they are the most special person on earth. (If they are adopting one of your animals, they are!)
5. Be loyal and believe in your people. They share your mission. Every day is a new opportunity to do great things.
6. Motivation helps. Maybe it's food, play, or a kind word. A little positive reinforcement never hurt anyone.
7. Eat well and get enough rest. Always take care of yourself first. Then you can take care of others.
Running a business can be stressful and difficult. When you need a little inspiration, it may be as close as the nearest canine. (In my case, that canine is generally about 6 inches from my chair!)
As always, thank you for all you do to help the animals ;-)
